NEWSLETTER - OCTOBER 23RD

Hi! We have had such a FANTASTIC week of FALL FUN! We just love our jobs! Where else can you come to work wearing a Doctor Seuss hat or a chicken on your head?!?!?! It was great to see the children dressed up each day to celebrate our school's homecoming! We hope to see many of you at tonight's game...GO MUSTANGS!!!!!

In addition to all the fun, we learned, learned, learned! Here are just a few highlights:

  • Reading - We read a wonderful fictional selection called The Butterfly House. We talked about point of view and sequencing, and practiced lots of reading strategies, including Monitoring/Clarifying and Summarizing. We continued reading our rain forest chapter book in reading group, too, and we compared/contrasted some animals that we read about!

  • Math - We practiced telling time to the minute, counting money past one dollar, and reading graphs. We learned about estimation and how to record numbers represented by tens and ones blocks.

  • Science - We learned about the layers of the Earth and began learning about rocks. On Monday, the Young Scientists went to the Science Lab and observed minerals inside the rocks. Fun!

  • Writing - We reviewed how to write a 5 paragraph essay, and we finished writing our habitat reports. Some of these are already graded and in this week's Friday Folder. If your child's isn't in there, it will be next week! They worked really hard on these!

  • Language Arts - We reviewed comma usage, capitalization, and end punctuation. We learned about homonyms, too!

  • We also had Firefighter Trese come and talk to us about fire safety, which the children really enjoyed!

Here are a few announcements/reminders:

  • October 30th - PUMPKIN DAY! Your child may wear orange to school that day or anything with a pumpkin on it!

  • The BOOK FAIR is coming up the week of November 3rd! MRS. CORSINO'S CLASS will preview the fair on THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 3RD, and we will shop on THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 5TH at 1:50 in the afternoon. Feel free to send your child to school with money to buy books that day!

  • November 5th - Field trip to Mahaffey Theater - Be sure to pack your child a lunch that day as we won't be back in time for hot lunch!

  • November 11th - Flag project due!!!

  • Second grade is in charge of chapel in December. We will be doing a short Christmas Play. Sometime before Thanksgiving, we will let you know what your child's part is so that you can keep your eyes out for a costume!

  • In February or March we will be celebrating Dr. Seuss' Birthday. The children will be allowed to dress up like the Cat in the Hat or another character from a Dr. Seuss book that day. We just wanted to give you a "heads up" about this so that you can be looking when the Halloween costumes go on sale!

  • Please be sure to send your child's "book baggie" and bookmark to school each day! I check these most afternoons to see what the children are reading!

  • Please be sure to practice addition and subtraction facts up to 18 with your child at home. Thanks!

  • Bible - Moses and the 10 Commandments

We would really like to have the chance to conference with all of our families sometime in the next month 0r so. We are available after school (at 3:15) on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Please let me know a date and time you would like to come by writing a note in your child's agenda. (We can do these in 15 minute increments...so you could either come at 3:15, 3:30, or 3:45. If someone else has already requested the date and time that you ask for I will write a note suggesting a different time that's close to the one you requested.) Thanks!

For my personal devotion time this week, I have been reading in the Book of 2 Corinthians. A verse that spoke to me was Chapter 4 Verses 8-9 which says, "We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed." Even when we go through difficulties in our life, we have God on our side. Sometimes when we are experiencing something hard, it's the best time for others to see the work of Jesus in our lives!

Have a Fun Fall weekend with your sweeties!

In Christ's Name,

Mrs. Corsino and Mrs. Lupia

PS Next week's STAR STUDENT in Mrs. Corsino's class is SAMUEL.

Mrs. Lupia'S STAR STUDENT is MARIA.
