What a FANTASTIC week it was here in second grade!   Today was the highlight of the week!  Chapel was absolutely beautiful---I was SOOOOOOOOO PROUD of the second graders for hiding Luke 2:8-19 in their hearts and reciting it.  They all truly understand the meaning of Christmas!  Afterwards, we all enjoyed our time together celebrating Jesus' birth.  Thanks so much for sending in the ornaments for your children as well as the items for our special breakfast.  Thanks also for all you've done the past few weeks---dressing your children to look like Mary and Joseph last Friday...coming to the Christmas Program on Tuesday night...remembering to send them in jammies on Wednesday---sending in items that we need...I know how much there is to do this time of year, and I appreciate you all!!!

We did lots of learning this week, too!  Here are some highlights:
*Reading - the children did lots of independent reading this week, and we also read some great Christmas stories.  One of my all time favorites was The Legend of the Candy Cane.  Ask your child to tell you why we eat candy canes at Christmastime.
*Writing - We finished up our Christmas Around the World picture books.
*Science - We finished our study of animals and their habitats.
*Math - We did lots of review, and we also began taking multiplication tests!
*Handwriting - We began learning our uppercase letters in cursive this week!
*Language Arts - We did lots of review, focusing on the 4 types of sentences.
*Bible - We continued to focus on the Christmas Story for Bible this week.

In school this week, I played one of my favorite Christmas Carols for the children...Mary Did You Know?  I just love this song because it's asking Jesus' mother if she knew what her baby boy would grow up to become.  Ultimately, He grew up to become the Savior of the World.  I still marvel at the wonder of the night He came into this world...and I marvel even more at the sacrifice He made for me.  John 3:16 says, "For God so loved the world that He gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal ife."  He loves us THAT much!

Have a WONDERFUL, JESUS-FILLED CHRISTMAS!  REMEMBER, THERE IS NO SCHOOL ON MONDAY, JANUARY 3RD.  SCHOOL WILL RESUME ON TUESDAY THE 4TH.  I'LL SEE YOU ALL THEN!

In Christ's Name,
Mrs. Corsino

PS  After Christmas break, our STAR STUDENT will be ANTHONY!!!

NEWSLETTER - DECEMBER 10TH

santa waves
Hi!  Happy Friday!  This week just FLEW by!  We have been sooooooo busy!  The children really enjoyed learning more ways that Christmas is celebrated around the world!  On Monday and Tuesday, we focused on how Christmas is celebrated in Sweden.  We made crowns and ate ginger snaps like the Swedish children do on St. Lucia Day, and we made birdfeeders out of pine cones, peanut butter, and bird seed like they do on Christmas Eve!  On Wednesday we learned about Christmas in England, made "bobby hats," and went Christmas caroling around the school, just like they do in England!  On Thursday and Friday we learned about how Christmas is celebrated in Mexico!  We paraded around the school dressed like Mary and Joseph!

We also had a lot of fun on Thursday watching the High School production at the church!  What a blessing it was!

Here are some other things we did:
*Bible - We continued working on memorizing our Christmas passage and we talked a lot about the true meaning of Christmas.
*Reading - We discussed the elements of different types of genres, focusing on the difference between fact, fairy tales, and folktales.  We read a Swahili folktale called "How Guinea Fowl Got Her Spots," too!  While reading, we focused on the strategies of asking questions and making predictions.  The children worked independently on their reading tests this week, too!
*Writing - We reviewed the elements of picture books and continued working on our Christmas Around the World picture books.  We talked about adding adjectives, adverbs, and prepositional phrases to our writing to make our sentences more interesting and informative, too!  We also reviewed letter writing!
*Math - We learned a lot about geometry this week, focusing on the difference between slides, flips, and turns.  We did a fun activity on the Smart Board to help us remember.  We also practiced subtraction with regrouping.
*Handwriting - We learned how to make a lower case v and z in cursive this week.  Yay!  Now we know all of our lower case letters in cursive!
*Phonics - We focused on suffixes this week.

Here are a few important reminders:
*NEXT WEEK, THE ONLY DAY THAT HOT LUNCH WILL BE OFFERED IS ON MONDAY.  BE SURE TO PACK YOUR CHILD A LUNCH THE REST OF THE WEEK!  THANKS!
*NEXT TUESDAY, 12/14TH IS OUR CHRISTMAS CONCERT AT THE CHURCH!  We will travel to the church that morning to practice, and the program will be that night.  Be sure that your child wears dressy Christmas attire---red, green, and white would be great!  Arrive at 6:45---we'll meet in a pew in the sanctuary.
*Wednesday, 12/15th - Polar Express Party to celebrate Christmas in America!  Your child may wear jammies to school that day!  Feel free to send in popcorn, hot chocolate, or paper cups for us to enjoy that day!
*Friday, 12/17th - HAPPY BIRTHDAY JESUS PARTY!!!  Send your child with the following that day:
-The special ornament that you bought for him/her, wrapped, with a note
     -Your assigned breakfast/party item
-Christmas clothes (not required---just if you want to!)
     -REMEMBER---SCHOOL GETS OUT AT 11:30!!!

This week, I've been thinking a lot about the miracle of Jesus' birth.  What a wonderful gift He gave us when he left His perfect home in Heaven, to be born in a stable and laid in a manger, just so that He could grow up and die to pay for our sins.  And He promised that He would come again!  What a great promise!

Enjoy your weekend!!!  Get some Christmas shopping done!!!

In Christ's Name,
Mrs. Corsino

Next week's Star Student will be JACK T.
SECRET WORD: WREATH

THERE WILL NOT BE A SPELLING TEST NEXT WEEK OR THE WEEK WE RETURN.  NEXT WEEK, WE'LL BE LEARNING SOME FUN CHRISTMAS WORDS!  THESE ARE ON THIS WEBSITE AND ALSO ON SPELLING CITY IF YOUR CHILD WANTS TO PRACTICE JUST FOR FUN!!!

PS BE SURE TO TELL SANTA THAT A GREAT IDEA FOR STOCKING STUFFERS IS SCHOOL SUPPLIES!  MOST OF THE CHILDREN ARE IN NEED OF WET GLUE, GLUE STICKS, CRAYONS, AND MARKERS, AND SOME OF THEM HAVE LOST THEIR SCISSORS!!!  SEVERAL HAVE FILLED UP THEIR AUTHOR'S NOTEBOOKS (SPIRAL NOTEBOOKS) TOO!

PPS  There are still several of you who I haven't had a chance to conference with yet this year!  Please be sure to write me a note to let me know when you'd like to get together!  Next week isn't good---but we can meet sometime in January.  I'm available at 7:30 AM on MONDAYS, THURSDAYS, and FRIDAYS and at 3:30 on MONDAYS, WEDNESDAYS, AND FRIDAYS.  Just let me know what date and time is good for you!  :o)
Matthew is making a bird feeder out of a pine cone, peanut butter, and bird seed---just like they do in Sweden on Christmas Eve!

The girls are wearing the St. Lucia crowns that they made!

The boys are wearing their St. Lucia crowns!

Riley and Joshua in their St. Lucia crowns!

We're caroling just like they do in England!

Aren't they adorable???!!!

NEWSLETTER - DECEMBER 3RD

Hi!  Happy December!  It's been a SUPER DUPER CHRISTMASSY WEEK here in second grade!  We've had lots of fun making our classroom look like Christmas!  The children made paper chains & ornaments for our class tree and decorated our bulletin board to look like the nativity!  Here are some other things we did:

*Bible - We practiced out Christmas Passage many times and talked about the first Christmas.
*Writing - We talked about perspective for writing this week.  Then, each child made either an inanimate object or an animal for our Christmas bulletin board and wrote about Jesus' birth from that item's perspective.  We also learned about picture books and the children began writing picture books, too!
*Reading - We continued our unit about camouflage for reading, and we talked a lot about Author's Purpose this week.  We discussed how to choose a "Just Right" book, too!
*Math - We focused on Geometry concepts this week!  We talked about symmetry and made "SymmeTREES!"
*Social Studies - For the month of December, we're focusing on the ways that Christmas is celebrated around the world.  This week, we learned about how Christmas is celebrated in France and Holland and wrote about what we learned.  To help them remember, we made Yule log cakes out of Twinkies for France, and we drew gingerbread houses and glued candy onto them for Holland.  We also got a visit from "Sinter Klaas," Holland's Santa!
*Science - We continued to learn about animals and their habitats during reading group by focusing on manatees and dugongs.  We compared and contrasted these animals and talked about how they're endangered and what we can do to help!
*Language Arts - We learned the difference between helping verbs and linking verbs this week, and we began learning a verb song!

Here are a few reminders:
*On THURSDAY, DECEMBER 9TH, we will be going over to the church to see a High School performance.  We will leave school at 1:00 and arrive back by 2:30.
*On FRIDAY, DECEMBER 10TH (Next Friday) we will be learning about Christmas in Mexico.  Children may come to school dressed to look like Mary or Joseph that day.  (...Nothing fancy...keep it simple...they can wrap up in sheets...) Children may bring dolls to pretend they're Baby Jesus if they want to!
*On our last week before Christmas break, hot lunch will ONLY BE OFFERED ON MONDAY, 12/13, AND THE ONLY OPTION WILL BE PIZZA!  There will be no hot lunch offered the rest of that week because High School will be taking their exams.
*Our Christmas Concert at Northside Baptist Church will be on TUESDAY, DECEMBER 14TH, so be sure to put this date on your calendar!
*We will talke about Christmas in America on WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 15TH, and we will celebrate by having a Polar Express Party!  Children may come to school in their pajamas that day!
*FRIDAY, DECEMBER 17TH will be a half day!  It will also be our class Christmas Party!  Remember to send in a wrapped ornament for your child to open during our party and a note telling him/her why you picked that ornament and how your child is special to you!  There is a note in this week's Friday Folder letting you know what else you need to send in!

At church last weekend, Pastor Kroll was talking to us about the miracle of Christ's birth.  It is SOOOOO INCREDIBLY AMAZING to me that prophets told about this miracle hundreds and hundreds of years before it happened!  Isaiah 7:13-14 tells us about Jesus' mom; Isaiah 9:6-7 tells us about Jesus' heritage and character; and Micah 5: 2 tells us that He would be born in Bethlehem.  Then, hundreds of years after the prophets talked about these things, they happened!  I just marel at the wonder of it all!

Enjoy your weekend!

Jen Corsino

Next week's Star Student will be JASON.

Newsletter - November 19th

Hi, everyone! HAPPY FRIDAY BEFORE THANKSGIVING BREAK!

It's been a fun-filled week here in second grade! We started the week with Thanksgiving Fun! The children made Indian costumes, fall wreaths, and fun-foam turkeys to celebrate all we have to be thankful for! Then, on Tuesday, they took a field trip to see "Schoolhouse Rock" as a fun way to review much of what we've been learning this year! Mrs. Greenleaf stood in for me on the trip as Mrs. Neri set up a time for me to go and observe at another school that day---and I learned lots of great things that I'll be using in our classroom, so it was well worth it! I was happy to hear about how much the children enjoyed the play!!!

Of course, the highlight of the week was Thursday's Thanksgiving on the Lawn! We started our day putting together all of the shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child. I just love how excited the children get about blessing others with their gifts! What a wonderful time of togetherness and thankfulness the entire day was! Afterwards, all of the classes did such an AMAZING job on their parts, and it was so nice to spend some time with all of our wonderful Northside families! And, of course, the food was yummy, too!!!
Then, this morning during chapel, the children carried the boxes over and we prayed for the children who will be receiving them. After chapel, we talked about our Class Bible Verse this year: "Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me" (Matthew 25:40).

In addition to all of the fun, we worked hard this week, too! Here are just a few highlights:
*Reading - We began our new reading unit "Look Again" which is all about how animals use camouflage. We also read some fun Thanksgiving stories!!!
*Writing - We finished writing our Turkey Fairy Tales. The children are all such creative writers! They also wrote about how they are thankful for some things that we usually don't take the time to be thankful for! (For example, some of them are thankful that you make them clean their rooms because it means they have toys to play with.)
*Math - We did lots and lots of review!
*Language Arts - We reviewed capitalization and punctuation rules.
*Social Studies - We continued to learn about the First Thanksgiving!
*Science - We talked some more about habitats this week!

Here are a few important announcements/reminders:
*There will be NO SCHOOL all next week in celebration of Thanksgiving! Enjoy your time with your families!
*There is no homework over break---enjoy your time with your families!!! There will also not be a spelling test the week we return.
*12/14 - Christmas Concert (I'll Be Home for Christmas) at Northside Baptist Church
*12/17 - Christmas Party and Half Day
For the Christmas Party, instead of a gift exchange, I am asking each parent to purchase an ornament for his/her child. Then, wrap the ornament, and write a special note to your child telling why you picked that particular ornament. We will talk about how Jesus was a special gift to Mary and Joseph---and to the world---and then we will talk about how each child in our classroom is a special gift, too!
*12/20-1/3 - NO SCHOOL! CHRISTMAS BREAK!

This week, I am reminded of Colossians 3:17, which says, "And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in th ename of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him." Remember to count your blessings and give thanks for each and every one!

Newsletter - November 12th

Hi, everyone! We've made it to the end of the first week since the time change! I am just LOVING being able to drive to work when the sun is rising instead of in the pitch black!

It was a GREAT week here in second grade! We starting learning about how the first Thanksgiving came to be. We focused on the Separatists and why they left England in the first place, and we talked about how they ended up going to America. Next week we'll talk about the Indians!

Here are some highlights of some other things we did:
* During reading group, we read a selection called "Manatees and Dugongs," and we made a connection between this piece and the Science Chapter we read last week about habitats. We practiced Summarizing and Making Connections, too!
* For Writer's Workshop we reviewed the characteristics of fairy tales and began writing our Turkey Fairy Tales! Fun!
*For Math, we focused on probability. We also continued to work on addition, subtraction, telling time, measurement, and counting coins.
* Language Arts - We reviewed all of the capitalization and punctuation rules we've learned so far this year.
*Science - While I was out on Thursday, the children continued to learn about different kinds of habitats. They each picked a habitat and drew a picture showing the plants and animals that can be found there.
*While I was out on Friday, the substitute read a selection about Veteran's Day. The children wrote letters to Dr. Lackore, a Veteran who often substitutes here at NCS. They made some flags to honor our veterans, too.

Here are some important reminders:
*November 15-19th - Book Fair! Our class will shop on WEDNESDAY THE 17TH!
*Tuesday, November 16th - Field Trip to Mahaffey Theater. PACK A LUNCH THAT DAY!
*Thursday, November 18th - Thanksgiving on the Lawn - 10:00 AM - I hope to see you all there!
*November 22-28th - No School - HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
*December 14th - I'll be Home for Christmas Presentation
*December 17th - Half Day/Christmas Party!
12/20-1/3 - No School - Merry Christmas! (School Resumes on Tuesday, 1/4th.)

As Thanksgiving is right around the corner, I've been spending a lot of time pondering all that I have to be thankful for. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 says, "Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." The Lord wants us to have joy, to remember to pray, and to be thankful no matter what we're going through in our lives. So, give thanks!!!

Here are just a few of the other things we learned:
*Science - We learned all about habitats this week, focusing on how habitats change.

I just wanted to let you know!
*November 15-19th - Book Fair! Be sure to send your child with some money that day if he/she would like to buy some books! Mrs. Neri always says, "...The more you read, the better you read!" We will be browsing on Monday the 15th and buying FIRST THING IN THE MORNING on Wednesday the 17th.

(WOW! IT SURE IS A BUSY, BUSY TIME, ISN'T IT?!?!?!?!?!)

Recently, God has really been impressing on my heart the fact that I can trust Him. It seems that at church, during my Bible study, here at school, and during my personal devotion time, this topic just keeps coming up lately! Sometimes in my life, I can get caught up in the details of life, and sometimes these details cause me to worry. I'm so happy that God knows my heart and reminds me that, in all things, I can trust Him!

NEWSLETTER - OCTOBER 29TH

Happy Trick-or-treat Friday! I'd like to start by thanking everyone from the bottom of my heart for making my birthday so special! You are all so wonderful to me, and I appreciate you!

Today was such a fun day! I really enjoyed seeing all of the children dressed like their favorite story book characters, and I had so much fun carving the pumpkin! While we carved, we said the pumpkin prayer:
Lord, open my mind so I can learn about you. (We cut off the top of the pumpkin.)
Take away all my sin and forgive me for the wrong things I do. (We cleaned out the inside.)
Open my eyes so I will see Your Love. (We cut eyes shaped like hearts.)
I'm sorry for turning up my nose to all you've given me. (We cut a nose in the shape of a
cross.)
Open my ears so I will hear Your Word. (We cut ears shaped like the Bible.)
Open my mouth so I can tell others You're near. (We cut a mouth in the shape of a fish.)
Let your Light shine in all I say and do! Amen. (We placed a candle in and lit it.)

In addition to all that, this week was, as always, SPECTACULAR! We did so many things! Here are some highlights:

*Reading - We finished up our reading unit on kindness by reading a folktale called The Paper Crane. We learned the elements of folktales and discussed how they are similar and different than fairy tales. We talked about the art of origami (which is in the story), and the children made origami cats. FUN! We also talked about cause and effect, and we focused on these reading strategies: Making predictions, monitoring & clarifying, and asking questions.

During reading group, we continued to read about the rainforest. These week, we learned about two tribes who live there! We learned about the things that we get from the rainforest, too!

*Writing - We reviewed the 5 steps of the writing process, and we began writing 5 paragraph essays about what we're thankful for.

*Math - As always, we reviewed lots of different skills in math this week, but we focused on fractions and place value.

*Language Arts - We continued to study quotation marks this week. We also reviewed nouns, verbs, and adjectives by watching School House Rock!

*Science - In the Science Lab, the children did an observation activity with earthworms.

In the classroom, we also talked about the Arctic environment. We discussed the adaptations that God gave the polar bear to help it survive, and we did an experiment to help us understand. Ask your child to tell you about it!

*Social Studies - We finished our study of American songs by talking about my all-time favorite, "God Bless America." We talked about the 3 branches of government in America, too, and we also discussed voting.

We met some characters who live on Sesame Street named Cookie Monster and Count von Count. They are both campaigning to be our classroom helper. Cookie Monster is promising to give us lots of cookies, and the Count is telling us that we'll always be able to count on him. Next Tuesday on Election Day, the children will be voting for the helper they'd most like to have!

Bible - We talked about how Joshua became the leader of the Israelites after Moses.

Here are just a few announcements/reminders:
*I would really like to have some time to conference with everyone sometime before Christmas break so that I can tell you all the wonderful things I notice about your child! I am available at these times:
Mondays - 7:30 AM or 3:30 PM (I am not available on Mon. 11/1st, though, because I have a doctor's appointment. :o)
Tuesdays - Not available - We have meetings on Tuesday mornings and afternoons.
Wednesdays - 3:30 PM
Thursdays - 7:30 AM or 3:30 PM
Fridays - 7:30 AM or 3:30 PM
Just jot a note in your child's agenda or e-mail me to let me know when you'd like to come and
I'll let you know if that date/time is available or if someone else already asked for it. Thanks!
*Next Thursday, November 4th is our annual auction. I am hoping to see everyone there for a night filled with fun! Please come support our school at this important event! I will be there from 5 until 7:30ish, but it doesn't actually end until 9:00.
*November 15-19th - Elementary Book Fair
*Tuesday, November 16th - Field trip to Mahaffey Theater to see School House Rock - Don't forget to send in $6.00 to cover the cost of admission and transportation! EACH CHILD WILL NEED TO PACK A LUNCH THAT DAY AS WE WILL BE LEAVING RIGHT AT LUNCH TIME AND WON'T HAVE TIME TO HAVE HOT LUNCH! WE WILL EAT JUST BEFORE WE LEAVE. Be sure to send a snack for your child to eat when we return to school. We already have our 2 chaperones for this trip...Mrs. Camarra and Mr. Huggins.
*Don't forget to send in a beige pillowcase for your child by November 5th!
*Thursday, November 18th -Thanksgiving on the Lawn - Please remember to send in your order sheet for lunch ASAP!

Currently, I am involved in 2 Bible studies...one at church and one here at school. The one here is all about the book of Revelation (which I just LOVE learning about!) One of the things we discussed was Revelation 1:8, where God says, "I am the Alpha and the Omega...who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty." God has always been in existence, and He always will be. We don't ever have to worry that He'll leave us because He promises that He won't...and God always keeps His promises!

Have a fun, candy-filled weekend!

In Christ's Name,
Mrs. Corsino
