Newsletter - February 26th

Hi! Happy Friday! What a GREAT week we've had here at NCS! We continued our unit on presidents and America, and the children had a great time learning about Abraham Lincoln by doing a webquest on the Smart Board. We did some other fun things on the Smart Board, too! We love technology!!!

We had a wonderful time honoring our grandparents yesterday! The children did a super job during the assembly reciting the lines of the Grandparent's Day poem that they wrote. They were so proud of the cards that they made, too! If your child's grandparents were not able to attend, be sure to mail them their special gift!

Here are some other things we learned:

  • Reading - We began a new unit on courage by reading a selection titled Molly the Brave and Me. While reading, we practiced using the comprehension strategies that we've learned this year.

  • Writing - We talked about what a personal narrative is, and the children wrote narratives about times when they were courageous.

  • Science - We began a unit on matter.

  • Math - We continued our measurement unit, and practiced some simple multiplication, too! (On Monday, the Young Scientists went to the Science Lab and practiced measurement while making English muffin pizzas. We talked about how the pizzas underwent a chemical change.)

  • Language Arts - We reviewed synonyms, antonyms, and point of view.

  • Bible - We talked about Jesus' parable of the sheep and the goats and discusses how, when we do things for other people, we are really doing them for the Lord.

Here are some reminders:

  • Next TUESDAY, MARCH 2ND is Dr. Seuss' birthday! Your child may come to school dressed like a Dr. Seuss character on FRIDAY, MARCH 5TH. (We were initially going to dress up on Tuesday, but the date has been changed to FRIDAY! THANKS!)

  • The Book Fair is coming up! Mrs. Corsino's class will shop at 9:30 on FRIDAY, MARCH 12TH.

  • March 12th is the end of the 3rd quarter. It will be a HALF DAY!

  • March 16th is the Elementary Science Extravaganza! I hope you all can join us from 7-8:30 PM that night for some Science fun!

  • March 29-April 5th - SPRING BREAK!

  • Tuesday, April 13th - Mike Huckabee fundraiser dinner - 6:30-9:00. Call Tessa Madasz for more information!

  • April 19-22 - Elementary SAT Testing

  • May 20 - Elementary Concert at Northside Baptist Church - 7:00 PM

  • May 27th - Last Day of School!

Last Saturday night at church, many people gave "cardboard testimonies." We took a piece of cardboard; on one side, we wrote a word or a phrase describing what our lives were like before we knew Christ. On the other side, we wrote about what our lives have been like since accepting Christ as our Savior. Then, one at a time, people walked up to the front, showed the "before" side of their sign for about 15 seconds, then turned it around and showed the "since" side. It was very powerful to see the many ways that people's lives have been changed! If you do not yet know Jesus Christ as your personal Savior, I would love to talk to you about it! Feel free to e-mail me, call me, or stop by my classroom any time! "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16)

Enjoy your weekend!

Newsletter - February 20th

Hi, everyone! It's the end of another FANTASTIC week in Second Grade! We started the week reading about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln in honor of Presidents' Day on Monday. We talked about the important job that a president has, and the children told me what they think a president does. It was so much fun to hear their answers! Here are some other things we learned:

  • Reading - We read a fun expository selection called "Let's Go Dinosaur Tracking!" to conclude our unit on dinosaurs. While reading, we reviewed all of the reading strategies that we've been learning this year. Next week, we'll begin a unit on courage!
  • Writing - We continued reviewing rhyming words and writing poetry. The children wrote some great poems which they'll be sharing on Grandparents' Day!
  • Math - We reviewed addition and subtraction with regrouping, multiplication, and geometry concepts, and we began a unit on measurement, too! We also played some fun math games on the smart board! In addition, we did marshmallow math today! We practiced multiplication and measurement using marshmallows, and then we ate a few! YUM!
  • Language Arts - We continued studying about adverbs and reviewed the other parts of speech, as well.
  • Bible - We learned the Lord's Prayer and talked about the importance of following Jesus' example of praying at different times, in various places, and for all kinds of reasons!

Here are some announcements of upcoming dates to put on your calendar:

  • Grandparents' Day will be next THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 25TH. The day will begin at 9:30! Grandparents or friends are invited to attend this special day! (Donuts will be available as early as 8:30 for any who are up and about!) Grandparents are invited to stay for a BBQ lunch after the morning festivities!
  • We will celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday on March 2nd. Your child may come to school dressed like a Dr. Seuss character that day. Feel free to send in a favorite story by Dr. Seuss for us to share! (Make sure your child's name is on it!)
  • March 12th is the end of the 3rd quarter. It will be a half day.
  • March 16th is the Elementary Science Extravaganza. It will be held in the gym from 7:00 PM until 8:30. More information will come home soon!
  • March 29-April 5th will be Spring Break. School will resume on Tuesday, April 6th.
  • On Tuesday, April 13th, there will be a fundraiser dinner from 6:30-9:00. Mike Huckabee will be speaking! For more information or to purchase tickets, call the main office and ask to speak to Tessa Madascz.
  • Elementary SAT testing will take place the week of April 19-22nd.
  • On May 20th we will have an Elementary Concert at Northside Baptist Church beginning at 7:00 PM. The children have already started working hard to get ready for this fun night!
  • May 27th - Last Day of School!!!

For my personal devotion time this week I continued reading in the Book of Revelation. Chapter 21 verses 3-4 reads, "And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, 'Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.'" Isn't that a wonderful promise to hold onto? I know that in my own life I have lots of ups and downs...days when I feel happy and other days when I feel sad or worried. How wonderful to know that in the future, when the Lord comes, He will wipe every tear from our eyes! Praise God!

Have a fantastic weekend!

In Christ's Name,

Mrs. Corsino and Mrs. Ludwig

PS Mrs. Corsino's Star Student next week will be FAITH.

Mrs. Ludwig's will be ANDREW.

NEWSLETTER - FEBRUARY 12TH

Hi! Happy Valentine's Weekend!

What a wonderful week we had here at NCS in Second Grade!

The Young Scientists started the week discussing weather. We talked about how the change in Earth's climate after the flood was most likely the reason the dinosaurs became extinct. We looked at the fossils we made last week using magnifying glasses (the Young Scholars did this on Tuesday!) and we practiced measuring the temperature of water using thermometers. FUN! WE LOVE SCIENCE! We did some FUN Valentine activities, too, and had TONS OF FUN at our Valentine Party today!

Here are just a few of the other things we did:

  • Reading - We reviewed the concepts of sequencing and using transition words while reading our selection Monster Tracks. We spent some time doing Star Reading (AR), too!

  • Writing - We learned about different types of poems and wrote poems for our Valentine cards!

  • Language Arts - We learned what adverbs are!

  • Math - We continued our unit on geometry and practiced addition and subtraction with regrouping. We did a little multiplication, too!

  • Science - We talked a little bit more about weather because it rained, so we were able to catch some in our rain gauges! We practiced identifying clouds as cumulus, stratus, and cirrus, too!

  • Social Studies - We read about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

  • Bible - We talked about the Books of the Bible and what each one is about, and we practiced finding them! We talked about how God inspired people to write the Bible...He "told" them what to write, and they wrote it down!

Here are a few announcements/reminders:

  • There will be NO SCHOOL tomorrow (Friday, February 12th) or Monday, February 15th.

  • Be sure to reenroll on InfoDirect if you haven't done so yet! Third grade with Mrs. Berry and Mrs. Cooke will DEFINITELY be a blast!

  • Tuesday, March 2nd is Dr. Seuss' Birthday! Your child may come to school that day dressed like a Dr. Seuss character is he/she wants to!

For my personal devotion time this week I've been reading in the Book of Revelation...one of my favorites! I love thinking about the future when Jesus will come to take us all Home with Him! One part that troubled me was Chapter 3 beginning at verse 13. It is a vision of the end times, and the Lord is speaking to a church in Laodicea. It says, "I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm - neither hot nor cold - I am about to spit you out of my mouth." The Lord doesn't want us to be complacent and just skate through life. He wants us to take a stand for what is right. I pray that I am not lukewarm, but that I will live a life ON FIRE for the Lord! Please pray for me that I will always live for Him!

Have a WONDERFUL LONG WEEKEND!

In Christ's Name,

Mrs. Corsino and Mrs. Ludwig

PS Next week's STAR STUDENT for Mrs. Corsino's class will be JOHN.

MRS. LUDWIG'S will be TAYLOR.

NEWSLETTER - FEBRUARY 5TH

Hi, everyone! HAPPY FEBRUARY!

We started the week with a FUN FEBRUARY song! On Tuesday we celebrated Groundhog Day by making predictions about whether or not Puxatawny Phil would see his shadow, by reading a poem about shadows, and by reading with flashlights in our "holes" (under our desks). FUN! Here are some other things we learned:

  • Reading - We read a selection called "Why Did the Dinosaurs Disappear?" and we discussed how Noah's Flood certainly had something to do with it! We used the reading strategies Making Predictions and Summarizing while reading, and we discussed cause and effect, too! We also reviewed the /er/ sound!

  • Writing - Mrs. Corsino's class practiced writing descriptions and short stories and used LOTS of adjectives! Mrs. Ludwig's class wrote 5 paragraph essays on showing love! Both classes practiced writing poetry, too!

  • Math - We learned lots about geometry, focusing on types of solids, symmetry, and making shapes. We also started learning about multiplication! WOW!

  • Language Arts - We reviewed quotation marks with a FUN activity using conversation hearts! We reviewed linking and helping verbs, too, and we learned about homophones!

  • Bible - We learned about the church and how it's made up of people working together to worship the Lord and help others!

  • Science - We finished up our unit on weather by sharing our Wonderful Weather Projects! They sure did come out GREAT, and the children were so pround of themselves! I was proud of them, too!

  • Social Studies - We started learning about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. President's Day is right around the corner!

Here are some announcements/reminders:

  • There will be NO READING TEST next week! We will have the Bee Test on WEDNESDAY right after the EARLY BIRD TEST because our Valentine Party will be on Thurdsay morning and there is no school on Friday...so be sure to study some over the weekend! :)

  • Our annual car and bike show is coming up on SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 6TH from 10:00 until 2:00. It'll be such a fun time!

  • Be sure to reenroll online ASAP! Just go to the NCS website and click on Infodirect!

  • Our class VALENTINE PARTY will be next THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 11TH. Be sure that your child brings his/her box in before then! Also remember to send your child with valentines for the class that day, too!

  • As noted above, there will be NO SCHOOL next FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 12TH or MONDAY, FEBRUARY 15TH. Friday is a teacher work day, and Monday is President's Day!

During my devotion time at home this week I read the Book of Jude. The part that I keep thinking about is verse 18, which says, "...In the last times there will be scoffers who will follow their own ungodly desires." I thought about our world and about how there are so many people focused on themselves...on what they want, or on what they have, or on what they want to get. We are so blessed that we live for Jesus and not just for ourselves!

Have a super-duper weekend!

In Christ's Name,

Mrs. Corsino and Mrs. Ludwig

PS EVERYONE HAS HAD A CHANCE TO BE STAR STUDENT! YAY! Everyone in Mrs. Corsino's class will get a second turn! This time, a form will go home asking your child to bring in these items: a recent photo, a baby picture, a favorite toy, a favorite book, a family photo, and a photo of a pet, if you have one! Initially, I was going to make a scrapbook with pictures of the children's time at home with Puz, but it didn't work out. (Some children forgot to bring in pictures of themselves with Puz, and others kept Puz for more than a week...so I just scratched that idea...Sorry!) NEXT WEEK'S STAR STUDENT WILL BE EMILY!
