Newsletter - February 20th

Hi, everyone! It's the end of another FANTASTIC week in Second Grade! We started the week reading about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln in honor of Presidents' Day on Monday. We talked about the important job that a president has, and the children told me what they think a president does. It was so much fun to hear their answers! Here are some other things we learned:

  • Reading - We read a fun expository selection called "Let's Go Dinosaur Tracking!" to conclude our unit on dinosaurs. While reading, we reviewed all of the reading strategies that we've been learning this year. Next week, we'll begin a unit on courage!
  • Writing - We continued reviewing rhyming words and writing poetry. The children wrote some great poems which they'll be sharing on Grandparents' Day!
  • Math - We reviewed addition and subtraction with regrouping, multiplication, and geometry concepts, and we began a unit on measurement, too! We also played some fun math games on the smart board! In addition, we did marshmallow math today! We practiced multiplication and measurement using marshmallows, and then we ate a few! YUM!
  • Language Arts - We continued studying about adverbs and reviewed the other parts of speech, as well.
  • Bible - We learned the Lord's Prayer and talked about the importance of following Jesus' example of praying at different times, in various places, and for all kinds of reasons!

Here are some announcements of upcoming dates to put on your calendar:

  • Grandparents' Day will be next THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 25TH. The day will begin at 9:30! Grandparents or friends are invited to attend this special day! (Donuts will be available as early as 8:30 for any who are up and about!) Grandparents are invited to stay for a BBQ lunch after the morning festivities!
  • We will celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday on March 2nd. Your child may come to school dressed like a Dr. Seuss character that day. Feel free to send in a favorite story by Dr. Seuss for us to share! (Make sure your child's name is on it!)
  • March 12th is the end of the 3rd quarter. It will be a half day.
  • March 16th is the Elementary Science Extravaganza. It will be held in the gym from 7:00 PM until 8:30. More information will come home soon!

  • On May 20th we will have an Elementary Concert at Northside Baptist Church beginning at 7:00 PM. The children have already started working hard to get ready for this fun night!
  • May 27th - Last Day of School!!!

For my personal devotion time this week I continued reading in the Book of Revelation. Chapter 21 verses 3-4 reads, "And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, 'Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.'" Isn't that a wonderful promise to hold onto? I know that in my own life I have lots of ups and downs...days when I feel happy and other days when I feel sad or worried. How wonderful to know that in the future, when the Lord comes, He will wipe every tear from our eyes! Praise God!

Have a fantastic weekend!

In Christ's Name,

Mrs. Corsino and Mrs. Ludwig

PS Mrs. Corsino's Star Student next week will be FAITH.

Mrs. Ludwig's will be ANDREW.
