NEWSLETTER - MARCH 19TH

Hi! Happy Friday! It's been another FANTASTIC week! We started the week on Monday by reading a part of the Easter story from the Bible and writing about it! We will be finishing up these writings next week...wait until you see them! The Young Scientists also made "Resurrection Biscuits." These biscuits underwent a chemical change! Ask your child to tell you all about it!

Then, on Wednesday, we had a visit from a leprechaun! He made quite a mess of our classroom, and he even left his hat behind! We spent the morning learning all about St. Patrick's life and how he was a missionary! Later in the day, we talked about special mixtures called "solutions" and made Shamrock Shakes to demonstrate how a solution is a special type of mixture which isn't easy to separate into its parts. YUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We did lots and lots of learning this week, too! Here are some of the things we did:
  • Reading - We continued our unit on courage by reading A Picture Book of Martin Luther King, Jr. We talked about how MLK showed courage and how we can show courage in our lives, too. As always, we practiced strategies to make us better readers!

  • Writing - We wrote about the Easter Story. We reviewed how to write a 5 paragraph essay and talked about adding details to our writing.

  • Math - We practiced multiple-digit addition and subtraction with and without regrouping. We practiced multiplication, too, focusing on the zeros and ones, and we even did a little bit of division! Some of the children have started taking tests on their multiplication facts. Ask your child to tell you about our multiplication chart!

  • Science - We reviewed the difference between physical and chemical changes and we talked about special mixtures called solutions. We made Shamrock Shakes on Wednesday and discussed how these shakes underwent a physical change. The shakes were a special type of mixture called a solution.

  • Bible - We talked about how it's important to always do our best, because everything we do we do for the Lord. We talked lots about Easter, too!

  • Social Studies - We discussed the history of St. Patrick's Day and discussed how St. Patrick and Martin Luther King Jr. had courage.

  • Language Arts - We reviewed capitalization rules, focusing on how we need to capitalize titles such as Mrs. and Dr. and people's initials, as well.

During my personal devotion time this week, I've been reading in the Book of Ezra. I read Chapter 6 versus 19-22 which talks about how the Israelites celebrated the Passover for the first time in a long, long time after they had finished rebuilding the temple. They had been ignoring God's commands for years and years. It got me thinking about God's Grace. Sometimes in our lives, we may find ourselves on the wrong path, heading in a direction which leads us away from God instead of towards Him. But God welcomes us back with open arms when we turn things around and decide to fall into His arms. What a great and loving God we serve!

In Christ's Name,

Mrs. Corsino and Mrs. Ludwig.

PS Mrs. Corsino's Star Student next week will be SARAH. Mrs. Ludwig's will be PATRICK!

PPS We have started a mission project in second grade to share the love of Jesus with others! We've been talking about serving with our hands, and we challenged the kids to ask you for things that they can do (i.e. chores around the house) to earn a few dollars. We will be collecting this money and presenting it to a NCS family later this month. It's so much fun to serve the Lord!

PPPS BE SURE TO VISIT THE YOUNG SCIENTIST'S LINK AT THE TOP RIGHT HAND SIDE OF THIS WEBSITE TO SEE WHAT THE YOUNG SCIENTISTS ARE UP TO ON MONDAYS! SOMETIMES THE CHILDREN WRITE THE POSTS...CHECK IT OUT! THERE ARE LOTS OF GREAT PHOTOS OF US IN THE LAB, TOO!!!
