NEWSLETTER - MARCH 5, 2010

Hi, everyone! It's been another WONDERFUL WEEK here at NCS! We had sooooo much fun this week celebrating Dr. Seuss' birthday! We enjoyed many of our favorite Dr.Seuss books, discussed rhyme, created some of our own "silly characters," and talked about what we loved about Dr. Seuss' writing! Come by the classroom and check out our new "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish" bulletin board! Today topped it all off! The children looked absolutely adorable dressed like their favorite Dr. Seuss characters! We went to the Science Lab and made some green eggs and ham to eat...YUM! We reviewed measurement, talked about mixtures/solutions, and talked about physical/chemical changes, too! We sure do have tons of fun learning here in 2nd grade!

We also had a great time during our Fiesta Day celebration on Thursday! We enjoyed the yummy Spanish food and learned a lot about Spanish culture. The children LOVED the games and activities, too!

Here are some other things we learned:

  • Reading - We continued our unit on courage by reading a selection called "Dragons and Giants." We learned how to "leave tracks in our reading" to help us become better readers. Ask your child to tell you about it!

  • Writing - We started to write some silly 5 paragraph essays about what life would be like if we lived in a wacky world (in honor of Dr. Seuss!)

  • Math - We learned lots more about measurement, focusing on perimeter and area. We also practiced double digit addition and subtraction, as well as multiplication. Wow!

  • Language Arts - We learned about conjunctions and interjections.

  • Science - We learned about the 3 types of matter: solids, liquids, and gases, and we learned about physical and chemical changes.

  • Bible - We talked about what it means to be Jesus' best friend!

Here are some important announcements:

During my personal devotion time this week, I spent some time reading in the Book of 2 Chronicles. I was reading about when the king of Assyria, Sennacherib, invaded the land of Judah where King Hezekia ruled. He encouraged his people by saying, "...Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged because of the king of Assyria and the vast army with him, for there is a greater power with us than with him. With him is only the arm of flesh, but with us is the Lord our God to help us and to fight our battles"(2 Chroncles 32:7-8). I just love that! Sometimes in my life I get so caught up in my struggles, and I focus on those few things instead of on my many blessings. We all need to remember that God is on our side...what more do we need?!?!

Have a blessed weekend!

In Christ's Name,

Jen Corsino and Province Ludwig

PS Mrs. Corsino's Star Student next week will be MITCHELL.
