NEWSLETTER - AUGUST 27TH

Dear Parents,

Hi! Our second week of second grade was even better than our first! We continued to do lots of learning about sea life, which the children really seem to be interested in! Mrs. Corsino's class focused on starfish. We learned many facts about starfish and looked at starfish through magnifying glasses. Then, the children drew what they saw. Mrs. Ludwig's class focused on seahorses. Both classes enjoyed working with sea life in the Science Lab. They especially loved the hermit crabs!

Here are some other things we learned:
*Reading - We talked about reading strategies and why they are important.
*Writing - We started writing our autobiographies.
*Math - We focused on addition and subtraction this week, and we did a lesson on estimating using M&Ms. YUM!!!
*Science - The children observed different types of sea life in the Science Lab and wrote about it in their Science Journals.
*Social Studies - We talked about American Holidays and learned why we celebrate Memorial Day and Flag Day.
*Language Arts - We focused on nouns this week, learned the "Noun Song," and talked about the difference between common and proper nouns.
*Bible - We discussed the Bible, we reviewed the stories of Noah's Ark and Abraham, and Mrs. Corsino's class started practicing for our class chapel.
*We also practiced our spelling words and started learning cursive! This week we learned i, t, and u!

Here are some announcements:
*If your child is in Mrs. Corsino's class, please have him/her bring in a handheld mirror next week. We will be using these for our chapel, so we will keep them at school until then. Any size is fine, as long as it's not too big! The perfect size would be the size of the ones they sell for lockers. They can have handles, but they don't need to. THANKS! (Please don't send in anything valuable. We will be very careful...but there's a chance that mirrors can break...)
*THERE WAS A MISTAKE IN LAST WEEK'S NEWSLETTER...SORRY! I SENT OUT AN E-MAIL WITH THE CORRECT DATE, BUT I ALSO WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW ON HERE THAT PICTURE DAY IS THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 2ND, NOT THE 12TH. SORRY!!!
*Our Open House will be on Thursday, September 2nd at 7:00. I hope to see all of you there! It will start at 7:00 in the gym and then move to the classroom.
*Second grade will soon be learning about Johnny Appleseed. To celebrate, we will have Johnny Appleseed Day on Friday, September 24th. (*tentative date) Each child should come to school that day dressed like Johnny Appleseed! After chapel, we will do some fun apple activities. We would LOVE to have some parent help for this fun day, so please write a note in your child's agenda if you'll be able to come!
*Mrs. Corsino's class will also have their special class chapel that morning at 8:15. The children will be singing 2 songs and putting on a short play for all to see! Soooo...Mrs. Corsino's class should come dressed in jeans and white T-shirts. They may bring other Johnny Appleseed attire (i.e. flannel shirts, rope belts, pans, etc.) to put on after chapel. WOW! What a fun day it's going to be!

In preparation for chapel, I've been thinking about how we can make a difference to the people in the world around us. In the Bible, Jesus tells us, "...Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me"(Matthew 25:40). When we are kind to those around us, it brings a smile to God's face. I just wanted to let you know that you have already made such a difference in my life this year. Thanks so much for your support and kind words. I feel blessed that God has given me the opportunity to be a part of all of your lives!

In Christ's Name,
Mrs. Corsino and Mrs. Ludwig

PS Mrs. Corsino's STAR STUDENT next week will be VIVIAN.
Mrs. Ludwig's will be ROWAN.

SECRET WORD: RAINBOW
