Newsletter - November 12th

Hi, everyone! We've made it to the end of the first week since the time change! I am just LOVING being able to drive to work when the sun is rising instead of in the pitch black!

It was a GREAT week here in second grade! We starting learning about how the first Thanksgiving came to be. We focused on the Separatists and why they left England in the first place, and we talked about how they ended up going to America. Next week we'll talk about the Indians!

Here are some highlights of some other things we did:
* During reading group, we read a selection called "Manatees and Dugongs," and we made a connection between this piece and the Science Chapter we read last week about habitats. We practiced Summarizing and Making Connections, too!
* For Writer's Workshop we reviewed the characteristics of fairy tales and began writing our Turkey Fairy Tales! Fun!
*For Math, we focused on probability. We also continued to work on addition, subtraction, telling time, measurement, and counting coins.
* Language Arts - We reviewed all of the capitalization and punctuation rules we've learned so far this year.
*Science - While I was out on Thursday, the children continued to learn about different kinds of habitats. They each picked a habitat and drew a picture showing the plants and animals that can be found there.
*While I was out on Friday, the substitute read a selection about Veteran's Day. The children wrote letters to Dr. Lackore, a Veteran who often substitutes here at NCS. They made some flags to honor our veterans, too.

Here are some important reminders:
*November 15-19th - Book Fair! Our class will shop on WEDNESDAY THE 17TH!
*Tuesday, November 16th - Field Trip to Mahaffey Theater. PACK A LUNCH THAT DAY!
*Thursday, November 18th - Thanksgiving on the Lawn - 10:00 AM - I hope to see you all there!
*November 22-28th - No School - HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
*December 14th - I'll be Home for Christmas Presentation
*December 17th - Half Day/Christmas Party!
12/20-1/3 - No School - Merry Christmas! (School Resumes on Tuesday, 1/4th.)

As Thanksgiving is right around the corner, I've been spending a lot of time pondering all that I have to be thankful for. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 says, "Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." The Lord wants us to have joy, to remember to pray, and to be thankful no matter what we're going through in our lives. So, give thanks!!!

In Christ's Name

Next week's star student will be JULIAN!!!
SECRET WORD: PILGRIMS
